AN L.A. LOVE AFFAIR, STREET-ARTIST STYLE
by Trina Hendry
Los Angeles is one of those cities that you either love or hate. I'm one of those people that not only loves it but thinks it is the best city in the world.
I love its Hollywood glamour juxtaposed with its laid-back, beachy lifestyle. I especially love the year-round Mediterranean climate and the vast stretches of white-sand ocean. I love the best Mexican food north of the border and the artistic expression and creativity that oozes out of nook and cranny. No city is perfect, and for that, I even love its flaws...
It appears I am not alone in my undying adoration of LA. A drive through the city's vast labyrinth of neighborhoods reveals giant, and beautiful, public displays of affection designed by some of LA's most renowned street artists. Each of them signifies a love letter to the City of Angels, which makes me swoon, given I get to call this city home after so many years of longing for it. Some are old, some are new, all are Instagram-worthy!
Here are a few of the Los Angeles-specific street art installations I have noticed, and maybe even posed in front of, lately.
MADE IN L.A.
8025 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood
Located on the side of the Cisco Home store in West Hollywood, this locally inspired mural has been a popular backdrop for photos since it appeared in 2013! I love this wall for its hometown pride. And, while I wasn't "made in L.A.," I feel I am certainly meant to be in L.A.
THE HEART OF LOS ANGELES
Arts District, DTLA
The Heart of Los Angeles mural, located at Angel City Brewery in downtown Los Angeles' Arts District, was created by L.A.-based artist Tiphanie Brooke. Inspired by Milton Glaser’s famous “I Heart New York” logo from 1977, the painted wall is an expression of the artist's love for the City of Angels. It has also become one of the most iconic and photographed street-art installations in the city.
Swan Stairway, Silver Lake
In 2015, Evelyn Leigh of The Painted Line was invited to paint the Swan Stairway, one of Silver Lake’s 52 historic stair streets. With 287 steps, the Swan Stairway is the most challenging stairway in the neighborhood and is one of the 10 featured landmarks on the Painted Stairways of Silver Lake Walking Tour. At entry to the last hundred steps a blue mural adorns the retaining wall, complimented by a quote from the band the Decembrists: "Los Angeles, I'm yours." The mural on this section of the steps was completed in November 2017.
In honor of the Los Angeles Dodgers making it into the 2017 World Series, Angelenos celebrated the boys in blue and white in many different ways, including via art. In Silver Lake, a wall at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Lucille Avenue was painted with the L.A. Dodgers logo, garnering lots of attention and stopping traffic.
WRDSMTH'S DEAR LA, I LOVE YOU
The Bloc, DTLA
One of L.A.'s coolest, and most mysterious, graffiti artists, WRDSMTH continues to beautify streets and walls, and mystify onlookers, with inspirational quotes written in his signature typewriter font. One particular mural that caught my eye is his love letter to the city, found at The Bloc, a mixed-use development in Downtown Los Angeles. His message his clear...he loves L.A. with all of his heart. Ditto over here!
