LA's BEST VEGETARIAN / VEGAN RESTAURANTS
Curated by Trina Hendry
Given its penchant for healthy living, it comes as no surprise that vegetarian and vegan restaurants have become as mainstream as steakhouses in Los Angeles. Whether you are a vegan/vegetarian or someone just looking to enjoy a meat-free meal, there are countless options to choose from. We've barely scratched the surface here but we hope you enjoy our ever-expanding list of the city's best veggie restaurants. Bon appetit!
THE BUTCHER'S DAUGHTER
1205 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice, CA
The popular New York City vegetarian cafe and juice bar opened its highly anticipated The Butcher's Daughter Venice location in January 2016 to the delight of local hipsters and curious visitors alike. On the menu are some of the NYC outlet's most regarded items, including the avocado toast, spicy kale Caesar and macro bowl, which is oh so Californian! New to the Venice location are wood-fried pizzas, which are a huge hit, and cauliflower steak-frites. INSIDER TIP: Order a cocktail. The menu features cold-pressed juices mixed with housemate tinctures. But get there early...it's only open until 5pm!
512 Rose Ave., Venice, CA | 639 N. Larchmont Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
Cafe Gratitude is a 100% organic plant-based restaurant that supports local farmers, sustainable agriculture, environmentally friendly products and promotes the power of positivity. Each menu item is named after a positive self-affirmation - I Am Elated, I Am Grateful - and the food is wholesome, inventive and downright delectable. INSIDER TIP: Save room for dessert. The key lime pie (pictured below) is to-die-for!
514-516 Santa Monica Blvd, Santa Monica, CA
While no longer a vegan-only restaurant, Erven still has its way with vegetables, offering several uniquely composed vegetarian/vegan dishes. Mainstays, and favorites of ours, include the Chickpea Fritter with black garlic and yuzu, the Cabbage Pancake with eggplant, chili hoisin and lettuce, and the Beets with pea, pistachio, rose and strawberries.
SAGE VEGAN BISTRO
4130 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City, CA
With its seasonal farm-to-table menu and delicious alternatives to traditional carnivorous favourites, Sage Vegan Bistro has a loyal following for vegetarians and meat-lovers alike. It is also known for its raw, vegan desserts, including its hard and soft-serve non-dairy ice creams, which you can find at the KindKreme bar inside. INSIDER TIP: Order the Buffalo Cauliflower. You won't find it on the menu but they happily prepare it for anyone who asks.
8905 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, CA
From the moment you enter Gracias Madre, you know you're going to experience something special. Not only is the room stunningly beautiful and the patio a garden oasis, the service is top-notch and the Mexican vegan cuisine - yes, we said Mexican vegan! - is outstanding. INSIDER TIP: Order the guacamole to start … it's incredible!
PLANT FOOD + WINE
1009 Abbot Kinney Blve, Venice, CA
Designed as a communal gathering place, Plant Food + Wine offers a beautiful selection of locally sourced, health-conscious fare in a seasonally crafted menu, enriched by an extensive wine list of organic and bio-dynamic varietals. Go for brunch, sit on the stunning back garden patio and order the cashew raclette to share before digging into the chickpea frittata or plant bowl. Heaven!
8284 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA
If you think vegan cuisine is tasteless and boring, you really need to visit Crossroads Kitchen where some of the most inventive meatless cuisine has been served since 2013. A hot spot for weekend brunches (and weekday dinners), the fine-dining establishment serves up Chicken & Waffles which is almost better, and just as good, as the meat version, alongside Crossroads Benedict, an Impossible Breakfast Sausage Sandwich and Pasta Bolognese. Meat lovers delight, we promise!
