Why You Should Visit the Carlsbad Flower Fields Now!

Hello, lovelies! Spring is in full bloom in California, and the best place to experience its beauty, in my humble opinion, is at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch in sunny SoCal. But get there soon because the blooms won't last for long.

Frolicking in the Carlsbad Flower Fields

Located about 30 minutes north of San Diego, the beach town of Carlsbad is likely best known for two things--its shopping outlets and its world-famous flower fields. These two destinations happen to be right beside each other...so you can shop and have your flowers too.

Carlsbad Flower Fields

The Flower Fields have been welcoming visitors to enjoy the rainbow-striped fields of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers for 26 years. Each spring, for 10 weeks, these blooms transform the landscape, complete with views of the ocean, into a carpet of color as far as the eye can see. Native to Asia Minor, the ranunculus is a member of the buttercup family. The bright array of colors in the fields today is due to the careful selection of Edwin Frazee, the "pioneer" of this highly successful flower operation.

Fun in the Carlsbad Flower Fields

This year, the season runs from March 1 through May 13th, seven days a week, from 9am to 6pm. Admission is $16 for adults, $14 for seniors and $8 for kids 10 and under. I highly recommend you tack on the wagon ride for $5, as it gives you a tour of the fields with on/off privileges so you can save your energy for staging that perfect Instagram moment, of which there are many.

While at the ranch, be sure to also check out the American Flag of Flowers which, you guessed it, is a replica of the American flag planted with red, white and blue (purple) petunias. Children of all ages lose themselves in the Sweet Pea Maze, and admire the massive orchids grown in the Cymbidium Greenhouse.

THE VILLAGE OF CARLSBAD

A few hours should be enough to see everything on the ranch, allowing you plenty of time to explore the rest of Carlsbad, which is simply charming. You can go outlet shopping right next door, but I recommend you head to Carlsbad Village, hop on a Pedego electric bike and soak up the California sunshine with a scenic ride along the gorgeous white-sand beach.

To quench your thirst, visit Barrel Republic for a craft beer tasting. What makes this place so unique is its Freedom to Pour wrist-band system that allows you to pour, taste and compare 50 beers on tap while indulging in their expansive comfort-food menu. Save room for dessert because you'll want to pop into The Goods right next door for an artisan donut (or three) and a Stumptown Coffee fix before hitting the road.

As E.E. Cummings once said, "The earth laughs in flowers." At this very moment, Carlsbad is laughing in all its glory!
